How do you know when you are going through menopause?

by admin on February 2, 2013

I’ve been a gynecologist for a couple decades and every year I help many women who are going through menopause. The first thing you need to remember is menopause is a normal, natural event that is associated with reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging. This results in lower levels of estrogen and other hormones.

Some normal changes related to menopause include hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, and vaginal dryness. Each woman experiences menopause differently and her own expectations of this time of life are important too. The good news is that menopause is better understood and more openly discussed than ever before. And because your body is going through changes, it’s also an ideal time to begin or reinforce healthy changes in your life.

If you feel you need some uninterrupted face time with your gynecologist where you can sit down and discuss this transition in your life, and possibly hormone therapy – please make an appointment. There are a lot of options out there. I can show you some of the data supporting the use of hormone therapy (natural hormones) and other treatments for menopause.

As your Houston gynecologist, I’ll also tell you about the indication, contraindication, side effects, and risks associated with the hormone use. Before you start anything, you need to know as much as possible about what you are taking and make sure that the treatment has been individualized for you.
