You’ve heard it over and over again how getting a good night’s sleep can improve your overall health. But sometimes getting the zzzz’s you need doesn’t happen naturally.

If you do decide to use sleep aids to help you, please use them wisely.

Here are 7 tips to keep you safe:

1. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to make sure you are getting the lowest effective dose to use for the shortest amount of time.

2. Don’t take more pills than prescribed

3. Read the instruction guide before taking them so you know what to expect and what the side effects may be.

4. Take the pill 15 minutes before you plan to fall asleep and once you take it, don’t plan on driving or doing anything that requires concentration.

5. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness during the day, talk to your doctor. You may need a lower prescription.

6. Never mix alcohol and sleeping pills.

7. Talk to you doctor before starting to take sleeping pills and about how to stop taking them as some pills need to be stopped gradually to reduce the risk of insomnia.
